Women's basketball comes up short at Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Holy Cross women's basketball team fell to Army West Point, 60-42, on Sunday, Feb. 7.

Juniors Avery LaBarbera and Kelly Petro led the way with nine points each for Holy Cross (5-5, 5-5 Patriot League). Junior Oluchi Ezemma had seven points and six rebounds; freshman Bronagh Power-Cassidy had seven points while freshman Cara McCormack added in a team-high seven rebounds and six points.

Army (9-8, 6-6 Patriot League) was guided by a 20-point performance from Sabria Hunter. Sarah Bohn finished with 12 points and five rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Trailing 6-2 early, the Crusaders used a quick 10-0 run, capped by a three from Petro and a fastbreak layup from Power-Cassidy, to take a 12-6 lead with 4:40 to go in the first.
  • Holy Cross led by as much as seven, 15-8, after Ezemma had a layup with 3:19 left in the first. Army closed out the first quarter on a 12-2 run to gain a one-point edge.
  • The Crusaders stayed close in the second quarter, trailing by just four, 32-28, after a LaBarbera layup. The Black Knights closed out the first half with five unanswered points to take a nine-point advantage headed into halftime.
  • Army continued to push in the second half, outscoring the Crusaders 12-7 in the third.
  • Holy Cross stayed within 14 points after a layup from Power-Cassidy with 8:27 remaining, but the Black Knights were able to push their lead as high as 20 after hitting a three with 3:34 to go in the fourth.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Army head coach Dave Magarity, the father of Holy Cross head coach Maureen Magarity, earned the win over his daughter in the final regular-season home game of his career, as he is set to retire following the 2020-21 season. The Crusaders finish the regular-season series against the Black Knights at 3-1.
  • Ezemma, who had four offensive boards on Sunday, continues to lead the Patriot League in that category, with 40 offensive rebounds on the season.

  • Holy Cross heads to Colgate for a pair of games on Feb. 13 and 14.
  • Tipoff in Hamilton, N.Y., is set for 1 p.m. on both days.
