BOSTON – The Holy Cross women's basketball team fell to Boston University, 71-53, on Wednesday, Feb. 17.
Junior
Avery LaBarbera led the Crusaders (6-6, 6-6 Patriot League) with 22 points, including four 3-pointers, and three steals. Junior
Oluchi Ezemma had 12 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore
Kerry Flaherty made a pair of 3-pointers to finish with six points.
Four players hit double figures for BU (9-1, 9-1 Patriot League), paced by 16 points from Maren Durant. Riley Childs neared a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Emily Esposito had 13 points. Sydney Johnson chipped in 10 points and four steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Holy Cross led 8-4 early, paced by four points from Ezemma in the opening minutes, but the Terriers closed out the first quarter on a 17-2 run to hold a 21-10 advantage after one.
- Ezemma hit a jumper to open the scoring for Holy Cross in the second quarter before BU responded with six unanswered points to build its lead to 15. The Terriers' lead grew as high as 18 with 2:39 to go in the frame; LaBarbera hit a layup with 49 seconds remaining to cut within 40-24 at halftime.
- After BU took a 20-point lead early in the third quarter, the Crusaders had seven unanswered points after LaBarbera made a layup and a three, and Ezemma hit a fastbreak layup, to bring Holy Cross within 44-31 with 5:34 to play in the third.
- The Terriers called a timeout and scored six straight points to rebuild a 19-point advantage over Holy Cross.
- With BU leading 57-39 at the start of the fourth quarter, Holy Cross cut within 13 with 3:52 to go in the game; BU regained its 19-point edge over the next two minutes.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- LaBarbera had her second 20-point performance on the season and the ninth 20-point game of her career.
- Ezemma has reached double figures in three of her last four games.
