WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's basketball team came up short against Boston University, falling by a score of 70-58 on Saturday, Feb. 20.
Junior
Avery LaBarbera helped lead the way for Holy Cross (6-7, 6-7 Patriot League), recording 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Freshman
Janelle Allen provided a huge spark off the bench, finishing with a career-high 15 points along with five offensive rebounds. Freshman
Bronagh Power-Cassidy also reached double figures, finishing with 12 points.
Maggie Pina had 17 points for BU (10-1, 10-1 Patriot League), while Katie Nelson had 16. Riley Childs pulled down 16 rebounds to go with eight points.
Prior to the game, Holy Cross celebrated Senior Day, honoring center
Shannon Murphy.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- With BU leading 16-9 with 4:53 to go in the first, Allen hit a jumper, followed by a layup from LaBarbera and another basket by Allen to bring Holy Cross within 16-15.
- The Terriers were able to rebuild their lead to six by the end of the first quarter, but the Crusaders continued to play tight, cutting within three, 32-29, after Allen converted on an and-one.
- LaBarbera's 3-pointer with 8:25 left in the third had Holy Cross within four points, 42-38, but a 15-2 run pushed BU ahead by 17 with 2:06 to go.
- The Crusaders had the last six points of the third quarter, and continued to cut closer in the fourth. Though BU took a 16-point lead with 9:06 remaining, Power-Cassidy rattled off six unanswered points to make it a 62-52 game with 7:09 left.
- LaBarbera hit a jumper with 5:21 left to make it an eight-point game, and Holy Cross came as close as seven points behind, 65-58, with a minute remaining, but the Terriers were able to hold off any remaining push.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Ezemma had four steals, a career high.
- In seven games played this season, Allen has reached double figures three times.
