STORRS, Conn. – The Holy Cross women's ice hockey program opened their two game weekend with a 4-0 defeat to Hockey East Conference opponent the University of Connecticut Friday evening at the Freitas Ice Forum.
The victory improves the Huskies record to 13-4-2, 6-3-2 in league play while the Crusaders drop to 2-13-0, 1-10-0.
THE GOALTENDERS:
- Senior Jada Brenon: 1-10-0, 24 saves, .857 save percentage; Megan Warrener: 5-1-1, shutout, 18 saves, 1.000 save percentage.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- UConn got on the board in the first when Claire Peterson notched an even strength goal at the 14:04 mark. The Crusaders put a few shots on the cage before 3:44 remaining when they were awarded the first power play of the game following a cross check by Peterson. No shots were put on net for either side on the advantage as UConn killed the penalty. After being outshot 7-1, the Crusaders put the final five shots on the cage of the period.
- Just 1:16 into the second junior Sofia Smithson had a chance to tie the game with a one-on-one opportunity with netminder Warrener but her backhand attempt went just over the crossbar. Kathryn Stockdale increased the margin for UConn as she followed two missed shots near the crease and snuck home her third attempt making it a 2-0 game just 2:29 into the second. Jada Habisch went top shelf for her sixth score of the campaign to up the lead to 3-0 in favor of Connecticut. Sophomore Grace Johnson ripped a shot high and wide from the back center of the attacking zone during a 4-on-4 opportunity with five minutes to go.
- Junior Mary Edmonds carried the puck through the right slot and had a one-on-one chance to break the deadlock however her attempt clanked off the left post keeping it a 3-0 game early in the third.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Warrener earned her third shutout of the season. Three of her five wins are shutout victories.
- It was the third straight game that sophomore Lilly Feeney tallied exactly four shots.

- Holy Cross continues Hockey East action tomorrow when they host the Huskies for the second game of a home-and-home series at 1:00 p.m.
