Men’s basketball dominates in season opener

WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore guard Judson Martindale scored a career-high 24 points as the Holy Cross men's basketball team posted a 98-51 victory over Regis in its season opener at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex. The Crusaders open the season at 1-0 overall, while the Pride begins the year 0-1.

Sophomore guard Bo Montgomery also had an outstanding night, totaling a career-high 19 points, three rebounds and three assists. Freshman forward Austin Lewis posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while freshman forward Caleb Kenney added 11 points, nine boards and three steals.

Holy Cross held an 11-6 lead early on, before scoring the next 11 points to go in front by 16 (22-6). The Crusaders were later up 28-11, when they used a 17-2 spurt to take a commanding 45-13 advantage. Holy Cross would go on to lead 48-19 at halftime. The Crusaders continued to dominate in the second half, eventually leading by as many as 51 before finally posting a 47-point victory. 

On the night, Holy Cross made 56.9 percent of its field goal attempts (41 of 72) and 47.4 percent of its shots from three-point range (nine of 19). The Crusaders also held a 49-25 rebounding advantage, while holding Regis to 33.9 percent shooting from the floor (21 of 62).

Holy Cross returns to action on Friday, Nov. 12, when it travels to Boston College for a regional round game of the Sunshine Slam at 7:00 p.m.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
• The 47-point margin of victory was the largest for the Crusaders since they defeated Army by 50 (88-38) on Feb. 8, 2006, and their largest ever in a season opener.
• Lewis became the first Holy Cross player to post a double-double in his collegiate debut in at least 34 years. 
• Three Crusaders made their first career start: Kenney, sophomore forward Louth-M Coulibaly and freshman guard Kyrell Luc.
• Holy Cross improves to 71-32 all-time in season openers, and 80-20 all-time in home openers.
