Beck posts shutout as women's hockey defeats BU

WORCESTER, Mass. – Paced by a 29-save shutout from sophomore goaltender Madison Beck, the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team earned its first win against Boston University in program history on Thursday, Nov. 11, posting a 2-0 victory at the Hart Center Rink.

The shutout victory marked the first collegiate win for Beck. After a scoreless first, junior right wing Darci Johal put the Crusaders (2-10-0, 1-7-0 Hockey East) on the board; senior right wing Sommer Ross had the second tally of the contest to give Holy Cross an insurance goal.

Freshman Emilie Fortunato had a pair of assists on the night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Terriers (5-4-3, 4-3-3 Hockey East) outshot Holy Cross 9-4 in the opening frame, but Beck stood tall to keep the game scoreless.
  • Johal broke through first at 8:59 of the second to give the Crusaders a 1-0 advantage.
  • Ross gave Holy Cross a 2-0 lead at 5:25 of the third after tipping in a puck sent in by Fortunato.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Johal is now the team's leading goal scorer, with four goals on the year.
  • This marks the first career multi-point game for Fortunato, who now has three assists on the season. She now also has the most points of any Holy Cross freshman this year.
  • Sophomore left wing Lilly Feeney, who recorded the primary assist on Johal's goal, now leads the team with four assists on the year.
  • BU had won the first six matchups between the two teams.
UP NEXT:
  • The Crusaders and Terriers close out the home-and-home series with a contest on Friday, Nov. 12 in Boston.
  • Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. at Walter Brown Arena.
