Crusaders skate to 4-4 tie at Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa.— Ryan Leibold and Nick Hale each tallied three points as the Holy Cross men's hockey team skated to a 4-4 tie at Mercyhurst on Friday night in Atlantic Hockey action.

After ending regulation in a 4-4 tie, and a scoreless overtime period, Mercyhurst (0-2-1, 0-0-1) prevailed over Holy Cross (0-2-1, 0-0-1) in the shoot out to take home the extra point in Atlantic Hockey standings.

Leibold tied a career-high with three points off one goal and two assists, while Hale posted a career-high three points and three assists. Jack Ricketts, Mike Higgins and Tyler Ghirardosi also all lit the lamp for the Crusaders. Ghirardosi's goal marked his first as a Crusader and his first collegiate point. Matt Guerra had an assist on Ghirardosi's goal for his first point as a Crusader and Lucas Thorne also notched his first career assist on Leibold's goal.

Leibold, Ricketts and Ghirardosi all scored on the power play, marking the first time since Feb. 2, 2019 at Army the Crusaders have scored three power play goals in a game.

Matt Radomsky made 31 saves in net, while Jake Higgins blocked a team-high three shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After being whistled for an early penalty, Mercyhurst converted on the power play to take a 1-0 lead. Then, just over five minutes later off the stick of Mike Higgins in 4-on-4 play, Holy Cross tied the game at 1-1.
  • The second period saw three power play goals between the two sides. The Lakers once again opened the scoring in the period with a power play goal, before Leibold netted one to tie the game up at 2-2. Mercyhurst ended the period with one more power play goal to take a 3-2 lead into the third frame.
  • In the third, Holy Cross scored two back-to-back power play goals from Ghirardosi and Ricketts to take a 4-3 lead. Mercyhurst tied the game with 40 seconds left with an extra attacker to send the game with OT.
  • A scoreless OT passed and the game officially went down as a 4-4 tie. In the shoot out for the extra Atlantic Hockey point, Mercyhurst converted 4 to Holy Cross' 3 shoot out attempts.
