Crusaders edged by Colgate in overtime

WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior forward Gerrale Gates posted a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds, but the Holy Cross men's basketball team was defeated by Colgate 74-63 in overtime at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex. The Crusaders fall to 2-7 overall and 2-7 in the Patriot League with the loss, while the Raiders improve to 6-1 on the season and 6-1 in the conference.

Senior guard Austin Butler gave Holy Cross a pair of players with double-doubles, finishing the day with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman guard R.J. Johnson also played well, scoring 13 points. Colgate was led by Jordan Burns with 21 points.

The Raiders opened the game by jumping out to an early 11-0 lead after the first 3:02 of action. The Crusaders responded with a 15-5 run to close the gap, and went on to tie the score at 21-21 with 9:29 left in the first half. But Holy Cross then went cold from the field, scoring just five more points the rest of the half as Colgate went on to take a 36-26 advantage into the locker room.

The Raiders would lead by as many as 15 points early in the second half (46-31), and were still up by 11 (56-45) with 7:51 left to play. A 7-1 Crusader run made it a five-point game (57-52), and Colgate was later up by six (61-55) with 3:39 remaining. Holy Cross would then hold the Raiders scoreless for the rest of regulation, and tied the score at 61-61 on a basket by Gates with just 2.7 seconds left to force overtime. But the Crusaders would make just one shot in the extra session, while Burns scored all 13 of Colgate's points in overtime to lead the Raiders to the win.
