Gerrale Gates posted his fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds, but the Holy Cross men's basketball team was defeated by Colgate 78-60 at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex. The Crusaders fall to 2-8 overall and 2-8 in the Patriot League with the loss, while the Raiders improve to 7-1 on the season and 7-1 in the conference.
Holy Cross made just 40.7 percent of its field goal attempts and 31.3 percent of its three-pointers on the day, while committing 14 turnovers. Colgate only hit 39.7 percent of its shots from the floor and 28.6 percent of its attempts from three-point range, but had just eight turnovers while posting a 22-10 edge in free throw attempts.
The game was close early on, and the Crusaders held a 13-11 lead with 11 minutes left in the first half. The Raiders then went on a 14-2 run to go in front by 10 (25-15) with 6:50 remaining before the break. Holy Cross scored the next six points to close the gap, and later went into the locker room down by just four (36-32).
Colgate held onto a small lead early in the second half, and was up by six (54-48) with 9:41 left in regulation. But the Raiders then used an 11-2 spurt to go ahead by 15 (65-50), and the Crusaders would get no closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

R.J. Johnson finished the game with 12 points and four assists, while freshman guard
Judson Martindale added 10 points, four rebounds and two blocks. Colgate was led by Nelly Cummings with 19 points.
The Crusaders are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, Feb. 6, when they will travel to Army West Point for a 2:30 p.m. game.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

Matt Faw set a new career high with eight blocked shots. That mark set a Hart Center single-game record, and was the second highest single-game total in school history.
• Holy Cross and Colgate have now played four times this year. This marks the first time the Crusaders have ever faced the same opponent four times in a single season.
