WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior Caroline Frey, a member of the Holy Cross women's track and field team, has been selected as the 2019-20 winner of the Honorable John P. Cooney Memorial Award. Presented by the Holy Cross Varsity Club in memory of Judge John P. Cooney (Class of 1923), the Cooney Award goes to a senior letterwinner who performed beyond all expectations with courage, loyalty and dedication.
Frey came to Holy Cross as a walk-on, and had both her freshman and sophomore seasons cut short due to injury. Through her hard work, persistence and determination, she began having success during her junior year, breaking the school record in the outdoor 400 meters (56.63) and earning All-ECAC honors as a member of the outdoor 4x400-meter relay team. Frey then broke three more school records as a senior, in the indoor 300 meters (39.66), 400 meters (55.78) and 500 meters (1:13.63). She was also named All-New England in the indoor 400 meters and All-ECAC in the indoor 500 meters, before the outdoor portion of her senior season was canceled.
In addition to her accomplishments on the track, Frey was a member of Holy Cross' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and a representative on the Crusader Athletics Fund Senior Class Gift committee. She was also a two-time selection to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
Frey will be presented with the Cooney Award at the 65th annual Holy Cross Varsity Club Hall of Fame Dinner & Ceremonial Banquet, which will take place later this year.
