WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's lacrosse team was defeated by Monmouth, 17-13, at Kuzniewski Field.
Catherine Guanci picked up a career-high four goals, including a natural hat trick in the first half to lead the Crusaders offense and
Grace Flink picked up 13 saves.
In the first half, the Crusaders and Hawks traded narrow leads. Monmouth opened the game with two quick goals, but
Jolie Creo and
Izzy Grant put the Crusaders on the board and evened the score. Back-and-forth scoring led to Monmouth taking a 7-5 lead with 10:24 to go in the first half.
Catherine Guanci scored a natural hat trick in four minutes to put the Crusaders ahead, 8-7. Monmouth evened the game before the close of the half, 8-8.
A four-goal run for the Hawks early in the second half proved to be costly for the Crusaders. Monmouth took a 13-9 lead with 18 minutes of action remaining. Grant scored, starting off a Holy Cross three-goal run to push the game back within one.
In the final 10 minutes of regulation, Monmouth outscored Holy Cross, 4-1. Guanci tallied her fourth of the day with 7:12 to put the Crusaders within two, 15-13, but team could not even the gap. Monmouth put in two more goals to take the game 17-13.
