Four different goal scorers lead men's hockey to first win of season

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team defeated Long Island University 5-2 Sunday evening for its first victory of the season. The night saw four different Crusaders find the back of the net, while nine players recorded a point.

Anthony Vincent led the way with two goals, while Logan Ferguson had a goal and an assist and Conner Jean and Alex Peterson each had two assists. Ryan Leibold scored the game-winning goal early in the third period.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
1-0 HC (1st, 13:50, PP): Vincent kicked things off when he gave Holy Cross the lead on the power play.
2-0 HC (2nd, 13:12, EV): Jake Pappalardo scored the second goal of the night when he went bar down, beating the goalie over his left shoulder.
3-0 HC (3rd, 00:26, EV): Just 23 seconds into the third period, Leibold converted from a tough angle on what would be the eventual game-winner.
4-0 HC (3rd, 3:45, EV): Ferguson was able to take the puck all the way across the crease to the weak side and tucked it in to increase the Crusaders' lead to four.
4-1 LIU (3rd, 7:01, EV): LIU got one back shortly after when Christian Rajic scored his second of the weekend.
4-2 LIU (3rd, 8:36, EV): The Sharks cut the deficit to two off the stick of Preston Brodziak.
5-2 HC (3rd, 19:34, SH, EN): With just 26 seconds to play, Vincent netted his second of the night as he fought through a defender to score on the empty net.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Despite not being on the bench tonight, this game goes down as David Berard's 100th career victory as a head coach.
  • Through two games, seven Crusaders share the team lead with two points. Pappalardo and Vincent are the only two with a pair of goals each.
UP NEXT:
Holy Cross will play a home-and-home series with Bentley next weekend, starting with its first road contest of the year on Friday, Nov. 27.
