Women's hockey ready for opening series with Maine

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's hockey team will open its season Friday, Nov. 20 at 6 pm against Maine. The Crusaders will play the second game of the series on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 1 pm, also at home.

TALKING POINTS:
  • The Crusaders are returning 78.9% of their offensive production from the 2019-20 season, including 10 of their top 11 point scorers.
  • Junior Carlie Magier paced all returners with 10 points last season from five goals and five assists. Senior Antonia Matzka led all returning defensemen with eight points.
  • Holy Cross also gets back both junior Jada Brenon and senior Julia Pelletier in goal, a combo that played every minute between the pipes for the Crusaders last season. Brenon posted a career-best .914 save percentage, while Pelletier finished last season with a 29 save, shutout victory over Vermont, her first Hockey East win and shutout.
  • Over the final eight games last season, the Crusaders averaged 1.75 goals per game, almost ¾ of a goal higher than their season average. In the six games leading up to their final series of the year against Providence, the squad was averaging 2.17 goals per game, putting up multiple goals in six straight games for the longest such streak of the program's Hockey East era.
CRUSADER CAPTAINS:
  • The Crusaders will be led this year by Matzka, Pelleiter, and Magier. Matzka was also a captain last season while this will be the first year that Pelletier and Magier wear the C on their jerseys.
SCOUTING MAINE:
  • The Black Bears return their leading scorer in sophomore Ida Kuoppala, but longtime offensive force Tereza Vanisova, who was second on the team in points in 2019-20, has since graduated.
  • Maine returns 75.2% of its offensive production from last season.
  • In goal, last year's starter in Carly Jackson has graduated, so the Black Bears will turn to her backup Loryn Porter, or one of two freshmen on the roster in Jorden Mattison and Anna Larose.
COACHING STAFFS:
  • For Holy Cross, Katie Lachapelle enters her fourth total year with the program and second as the head coach. Meredith Roth returns for her second season as associate head coach and the Crusaders welcome Devan Taylor, a 2019 UNH grad, as their new assistant coach.
  • Lachapelle was named the U.S. Under-18 Women's National Team head coach back in May.
  • It will be the eighth season for Maine's Richard Reichenbach as the program's head coach. He will work alongside associate head coach Sara Reichenbach and assistant coach Trey Flesch.
CRUSADER FRESHMEN:
  • Holy Cross welcomes a class of six freshmen who the program expects big things from right away. The class includes defensemen Vaia Graves and Grace Johnson, forwards Bryn Saarela, Millie Sirum, and Lilly Feeney, and goaltender Madison Beck. Fans will get a look at Johnson, Saarela, Sirum, and Feeney right away as all four are projected to be in this weekend's lineup.
PREVIOUS MATCHUPS
  • Last season, the Crusaders fell to the Black Bears twice before finishing the season with a 0-0 tie.
  • Maine also claimed two victories in 2018-19, but Holy Cross was again able to grab a tie, this time 2-2.
