Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Offensive spurt leads men’s hockey past Mercyhurst, 4-0

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men's hockey team downed Mercyhurst in its first game at the Hart Center in 2020, 4-0. The Crusaders picked up their first home win of the season as Matt Radomsky recorded a 23-save shutout and four different student-athletes found the back of the net.
 
Before the midway point of the opening period, Holy Cross' Erkka Vanska fired off his first of the season in just his third appearance of the year. Dalton Skelly doubled the Crusaders' lead nearly two minutes later with a slap shot from the point, 2-0. Radomsky stopped seven shots in the first period.
 
The Crusaders continued to dominate the game as they tallied two more goals in the second period, both on the power play. Matt Slick found his first of the year off of a faceoff at the 6:39 mark of the period. Anthony Vincent capped off the scoring at 12 minutes to give Holy Cross an easy 4-0 lead.
 
Radomsky made 16 shots in the final 40 minutes of action and helped the Crusaders to a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
1-0 HC | 1st, 8:49, EV: Vanska backhanded one home for his first of the year straight off the faceoff win by Pappalardo.
2-0 HC | 1st, 11:13, EV: The Crusaders doubled their lead less than three minutes later when Skelly hit a wristed a shot in from the high slot off feed from Ferguson and Peterson.
3-0 HC | 2nd, 6:39, PP: Leibold won the faceoff straight back to Barrow who set up Slick for the one-timer giving Holy Cross its first power play goal of the night.
4-0 HC | 2nd, 12:00, PP: Vincent beat the Mercyhurst goalie on a tough angle to increase the Crusaders' lead to four. Ferguson and Leibold both picked up their second helpers on the evening.

NOTES & NUMBERS
  • The Crusaders have picked up eight power play goals in their last seven games. Holy Cross went 2-for-6 on the power play against the Lakers.
  • Holy Cross outshot Mercyhurst 35-23.
  • Ryan Leibold and Logan Ferguson each recorded a two-assist night.
  • Eight different Crusaders notched at least one point.
