Women's hockey's comeback falls short at Maine

ORONO, Maine – The Holy Cross women's hockey team lost to Maine, 4-2, Friday afternoon at Alfond Arena.

After trailing 3-0, the Crusaders scored two third period goals to climb back within one, but the Black Bears would answer with an empty-netter to seal the win.

Rachel Moore had two points on the game. She scored Holy Cross' first goal and assisted on the second. Antonia Matzka had the other tally, while Emma Lange and Allison Attea picked up assists on Moore's goal. Jada Brenon made 37 saves in goal for the Crusaders.

SCORING SUMMARY:
1-0 UM (2nd, 7:55, EV): After a scoreless first period, Maine got on the board just before the eight-minute mark of the second.
2-0 UM (2nd, 13:15, PP): The Black Bears doubled their lead thanks to Liga Milijone five minutes later.
3-0 UM (2nd, 14:26, EV): Brittany Colton made it a three-goal period for Maine.
3-1 HC (3rd, 7:19, PP): Holy Cross converted on the 5-on-3 advantage when Moore tipped in a pass from Lange.
3-2 HC (3rd, 13:02, EV): This time it was Moore's turn to make a pass across the crease to a waiting Matzka who was just able to sneak it by Maine's Carly Jackson.
4-2 UM (3rd, 19:36, EN): After a couple close misses, the Black Bears were able to cash in on the empty Holy Cross net.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • The goal and assist marks Moore's first multi-point game of the season to increase her team-leading total to 10.
  • Attea's assist was her first of the year.
  • Maine's power play goal was the first the Crusaders have allowed while being down a skater in six games.
