Final Statistics • Highlights
WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior defensive back Joe Lang recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown with 1:56 left in the fourth quarter, to lift the Holy Cross football team to a 13-10 victory over New Hampshire at Fitton Field. The Crusaders improve to 1-1 on the season with the win, while the Wildcats open the year at 0-1.
New Hampshire was leading 10-6 late in the game, and took over on its own two-yard line with 2:02 remaining after stopping Holy Cross on downs. But on the next play, sophomore linebacker Liam Doran forced a fumble by Carlos Washington in the end zone and Lang recovered to put the Crusaders up 13-10. New Hampshire's next possession ended on an interception by senior defensive back Chris Riley, then one final Hail Mary pass fell incomplete on the final play of the game as Holy Cross pulled out the victory.
The first half was a defensive struggle, and the Crusaders led 3-0 at the break on a 28-yard field goal by sophomore placekicker Derek Ng. The Wildcats tied the score at 3-3 in the third quarter on a 21-yard Jason Hughes field goal, before a 20-yard Ng field goal put Holy Cross back in front 6-3 early in the fourth quarter. New Hampshire then claimed a 10-6 lead on a 19-yard touchdown run by Washington with 6:52 left to play.
Junior quarterback Connor Degenhardt led the Crusader offense by hitting on 21 of 34 passes for 253 yards, with senior tight end Derek Mountain making six catches for 55 yards. Lang finished with six tackles and one pass breakup for the defense, while sophomore defensive back Terrell Prince added six tackles.
Holy Cross returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 21, when it travels to Yale for a 1:00 p.m. game.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
• The Crusaders now stand 8-9 all-time against New Hampshire, including a 6-3 mark at Fitton Field.
• Mountain set a new career-high with his six receptions.
• Sophomore wide out Spencer Gilliam finished the day with four receptions for a career-best 89 yards.
• Holy Cross forced three turnovers on the day without giving the ball away once.
