Softball Falls to Colgate in Nine Innings

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team fell to Colgate, 6-5, in nine innings Sunday afternoon.

The Crusader bats had their best day of the year with a season-high 16 hits, but it wasn't enough to claim the win. Erin Bengston was 4-for-5 for the first four-hit game of her collegiate career, as well as the team's first this season. She scored twice and doubled. Jackie Brewster went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Jessie Nagel, Taylor Wahler, and Hannah Horton all had two hits, with Horton recording an RBI as well. Alyssa Gutierrez, Alexandra Held, and Bailey Chavez each had a hit on the day, with Gutierrez and Chavez recording an RBI apiece, and Held one run.

Held got the start in the circle and went five innings giving up three earned runs on six hits and no walks, while striking out six. Kelly Nelson threw three innings in relief and gave up two earned runs on five hits and one walk and struck out three.

Fourth Inning:

  • Nagel and Bengston reached base with singles.
  • Horton followed with a two-out single to score the first run of the game.
  • Gutierrez would single to right to make it 2-0.

Sixth:

  • Bengston started the inning with a double and Burr would follow with a walk.
  • Bengston came home on Horton's single to center.
  • The Crusaders scored their fourth run of the game on Brewster's single and they made it 5-0 when Chavez knocked one through the left side.
  • The Raiders got three back in the bottom half of the inning with four hits in the frame.

Seventh:

  • Colgate doubled with two on and two out to tie the game and force extras.

Eighth:

  • Held doubled and Brewster followed with a single to put runners at the corners with one out, but the Raiders got two ground outs to end the inning.  

Ninth:

  • The Crusaders again put a runner on, but Colgate ended the inning with a double play.
  • In the bottom half, the Raiders laid down a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error. They won the game in the next at bat with a single to left that scored the runner from second.

ON DECK:

Holy Cross will travel to Boston College this Tuesday for a single game at 4 p.m.
