Softball Wins First, Drops Second at Colgate

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team defeated Colgate in its first game today, 3-1, but ended up falling in the second, 2-0.

Kelly Nelson started both games in the circle. In the first, she went the full seven innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits and no walks, while striking out nine. On the day, she threw a total of 13 innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits and two walks, striking out 13.

Taylor Wahler was 3-for-6 at the plate on the day. Jessie Nagel was 2-for-6 with an RBI and a double. Jackie Brewster had a double on the day with a run and an RBI. Erin Bengston also doubled, drove in a run, and walked. Sydney Burr and Alexandra Held also had hits on the day, while Bailey Chavez walked and scored once.

Second Inning:

  • Colgate struck first when a run scored from first on a double to center field. The batter was thrown out at third on the play, but the run scored first.

Third:

  • Holy Cross struck back when Held started the inning by reaching first on an error.
  • Brewster doubled to right center to score Held and she advanced to third on the throw.
  • Nagel would single in Brewster to take the lead.

Fifth:

  • Chavez walked and with two outs, Bengston doubled to center, scoring Chavez from first.

Seventh:

  • Nelson got two fly outs and a foul out to end the game.

Third Inning:

  • The Crusaders' best chance of the game came in the third frame when Chavez reached base on an error with two outs.
  • Nagel followed with a double to right center, advancing Chavez to third.
  • The Raiders were able to get the third out without letting either across.

Fourth:

  • After a single to start the inning, Nicole Rounsavill hit her fourth home run of the year to left center to take the 2-0 lead.

Fifth-Seventh:

  • The Crusaders left a runner on base in the fifth and sixth, but were sat down in order in the seventh as Colgate evened the series at one game apiece.

 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Wahler increased her hitting streak to eight games, the longest on the team this season.
  • With two stolen bases in the first game, Wahler also set a new career-high with 10 thefts on the season. Her previous high of eight was set back when she was a freshman.
  • With 13 strikeouts today, Nelson now sits in second place in the program record book on the single-season strikeout list with 169. She is 24 strikeouts away from setting a new record.

Holy Cross will play the rubber game of the series against Colgate tomorrow at 12 p.m.
