Softball Falls to Bucknell, 5-3, In Extras

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team pushed Patriot League-leading Bucknell to extra innings Sunday afternoon, but eventually fell, 5-3.

Freshmen Jessie Nagel and Erin Bengston were each 2-for-4 on the afternoon with Bengston doubling twice, scoring once, and driving in another. Taylor Wahler was 1-for-3 with a triple and a run, and Sydney Behrens and Bailey Chavez were each 1-for-4. Behrens had an RBI and Chavez scored once.

Alexandra Held got the start in the circle for the Crusaders. She threw four innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits and striking out four. Kelly Nelson came on in relief and went five innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits while striking out three.

Second Inning:

  • Holy Cross struck first when Bengston started the second inning off with a double to right center.
  • Wahler moved her over with a sac bunt and Bengston was able to score on a wild pitch.

Third:

  • The Bison answered in the following inning, scoring after a single, a sac bunt, and a double.
  • Held ended the inning with a strikeout.

Fourth:

  • Bucknell took the lead in the fourth thanks to two doubles in the inning.
  • Held once again ended the frame with a strikeout.
  • The Crusaders answered in the bottom half when Chavez singled to start the inning and Nagel moved her over with a sac bunt.
  • She came around to score on Bengston's second double of the day, this one to left center.

Fifth:

  • The Bison took the lead back in the fifth thanks to a walk and two singles.

Seventh:

  • In the bottom half, Wahler tripled to right center on the first pitch of the frame.
  • On the next pitch, Behrens singled to right to bring Wahler home and send the game to extras.

Ninth:

  • With two outs, Bucknell shortstop Anna Gimmestad recorded her third hit of the day, a solo home run to left field to take the lead. Catcher Taylor Wolfgang followed with a home run of her own to give the Bison a 5-3 lead.
  • Nagel singled to start the bottom half, but Bucknell got the next three outs for the win.

ON DECK:

Holy Cross will travel to the University of Rhode Island for a doubleheader this Tuesday, April 16, starting at 3:30 p.m.
