Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team dropped two games today at the Madeira Beach Invitational. The Crusaders went to extra innings against Butler early in the day before eventually losing 6-3, and then fell to Akron, 6-0, in the late afternoon.

Despite the two losses, Erin Bengston had a strong day, going 3-for-6 with a home run, run scored, RBI, and a walk. Sydney Burr was 3-for-7, while Taylor Wahler went 2-for-8. Kelly Nelson had another impressive outing going the full nine innings, while striking out five, walking two, and only allowing two earned runs.

Vs. Butler

First

  • The Bulldogs struck first when they scored on an error after singling and stealing a base.

Third

  • Butler added two more in the third, again due to a few fielding miscues.

Fourth

  • Bengston got one back for the Crusaders with her first collegiate home run.

Seventh

  • Jackie Brewster and Bailey Chavez began the bottom half of the frame with back to back walks.
  • Brewster scored on a Jessie Nagel single up the middle.
  • Bengston loaded the bases with a single and Bella Jankowski would tie it up when she grounded into a fielder's choice, pushing Chavez across.

Eighth

  • Both sides had a runner on third in the first extra inning, but neither could get it home.

Ninth

  • The Bulldogs finally broke through with their first runs since the third, but it was too much for Holy Cross to overcome.

Vs. Akron

  • The Zips recorded five runs over the first three innings before adding a sixth in the seventh.
  • The Crusaders' most promising opportunity came in the sixth inning after Chavez walked and Wahler singled up the middle. Nagel grounded out, but it was enough to advance the runners to second and third, but the attempted rally would stall there.

UP NEXT:

The Crusaders will finish play at the Madeira Beach Invitational tomorrow, at 9 a.m., against Monmouth.
