Men’s hockey gets point in shootout loss at Air Force

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Holy Cross men's hockey team tied Air Force, 3-3, and earned one point in the game, as the Falcons took the win in the shootout. Three different Crusaders tallied goals on the night, two coming on the power play. Logan Ferguson led the way with two assists.  
 
Air Force took a 1-0 lead 12 minutes into the game, but Holy Cross battled back and evened the score before the first intermission. Kevin Darrar scored his third goal of the season on a two-on-one with Pete Kessel. The Falcons held a narrow, 8-7, shot advantage.
 
The second period saw two more goals apiece, all on the power play. Air Force jumped ahead, 2-1, on a five-on-three. Holy Cross killed off a five minute penalty before scoring on a five-on-three opportunity of their own to tie things up, 2-2. The Falcons took the lead once again, with another five-on-three. With its fifth power play opportunity of the period, Holy Cross again evened the game, 3-3.
 
There were 12 penalties called in the second period and each team had five opportunities.
 
The third period was quiet after a busy second. Air Force held a 7-4 shot advantage. Holy Cross killed off three penalties in the frame.
 
The teams skated through a scoreless five-on-five overtime, with each team having power play time. The overtime was even, both teams registering two shots.
 
In the three-on-three overtime, the Crusaders had an abbreviated power play where Ferguson had two great chances but could not get past Air Force's Schilling.
 
In the shootout, Shawn Knowlton scored in the first shot and Alex Peterson was denied, giving the Falcons the extra point.
 
Matt Radomsky finished the night with 27 saves.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
1-0 AF | 1st - 12:43 EV: Marshall Bowery scored from a point shot on an offensive zone faceoff.  
1-1 HC | 1st – 17:04 EV: Kevin Darrar forced a Falcon turnover at the offensive blue line and then skated in on a two-on-one with Pete Kessel. Kessel's initial shot was saved, but the junior slid the puck across the crease to Darrar on the back door for the goal.
2-1 AF | 2nd – 10:21 PP: On a five-on-three, Air Force's Kieran Durgan scored with a shot from above the left faceoff dot.
2-2 HC | 2nd – 7:27 PP: With a five-on-three, Logan Ferguson and Dalton Skelly worked the puck around before feeding Neil Robinson on the back post. Robinson one-timed the puck for his third of the season.
3-2 AF | 2nd – 10:21 PP: With one second remaining on a five-on-three, Jake Levin scored from the point through a screen.
3-3 HC | 2nd – 17:46 PP: The Crusaders played into formation on the power play and Ferguson sent a pass to the front of the goal, where Ryan Leibold took a whack at it before Anthony Vincent put it in his for his third of the season.

  • Kessel has picked up four points in his last four games played. The junior has tallied three goals and one assist.
  • Dalton Skelly now leads the team in helpers, with eight.
  • The Crusaders have scored at least one power play goal in each of their last four games.
