Final Statistics • Highlights
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior quarterback Connor Degenhardt hit on 20 of 33 passes for 315 yards and four touchdowns, to lead the Holy Cross football team to a 47-31 victory over Brown at Brown Stadium. Degenhardt added 48 rushing yards on four carries, to finish the game with 363 yards of total offense. The Crusaders improve to 3-3 on the year, while the Bears fall to 1-3 overall.
Holy Cross finished the day with a season-high 510 yards of total offense, while converting 11 of 17 times on third down. Brown managed just 346 total yards in the game and turned the ball over three times.
The Crusaders opened the scoring at the 11:49-mark of the first quarter on a 21-yard touchdown run by senior running back Domenic Cozier. After the Bears responded with a one-yard scoring run by Allen Smith to tie the game, sophomore placekicker Derek Ng kicked a pair of field goals to put Holy Cross up 13-7.
Brown took a 14-13 lead early in the second quarter on a two-yard touchdown run by Andrew Bolton, before Degenhardt hooked up with freshman wide receiver Ayir Asante for scoring strikes of 69 and five yards to give the Crusaders a 27-14 advantage. On the final play of the second quarter, Dawson Goepferich hit a 25-yard field goal for the Bears to make the score 27-17 at the break.
In the third quarter, Degenhardt found sophomore wide receiver Spencer Gilliam for a four-yard touchdown, before E.J. Perry threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Scott Boylan to make the score 34-24. Sophomore running back Peter Oliver then put Holy Cross up 41-24 with a two-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter. After Perry and Boylan connected for 57-yard touchdown, Degenhardt found Gilliam for a 72-yard score to make the final margin 47-31.
Gilliam finished the afternoon with 10 catches for 128 yards, while Asante totaled four receptions for 88 yards. Oliver led the Crusader ground game with 88 yards on 16 carries. On the defensive side of the ball, sophomore linebacker Liam Anderson totaled six tackles, a sack and an interception, while senior defensive back Corey Stefanik posted eight tackles with two tackles for loss.
Holy Cross returns to action next Saturday, Oct. 19, when it plays host to Harvard at 1:00 p.m. as part of Homecoming weekend.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
• The Crusaders snapped a four-game losing streak in the series, defeating the Bears for the first time since 2010.
• The 47 points scored were the most by Holy Cross since scoring 56 points against Lehigh last year.
• Gilliam and Asante both set new career highs in receptions and receiving yards.
• Degenhardt posted a career-high in passing yards, while Oliver had a career high for rushing yards.
