Final Statistics
BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore guard Austin Butler scored a game-high 22 points, but the Holy Cross men's basketball team was defeated by Boston University 68-54 at Case Gymnasium. The Crusaders fall to 12-10 overall and 3-6 in the Patriot League with the loss, while the Terriers improve to 10-12 on the season and 3-6 in the conference.
Holy Cross struggled shooting the ball, making just 37.3 percent of its field goal attempts and 33.3 percent of its three-pointers on the night. The Terriers were able to connect on 51.9 percent of their shots from the floor and 55.0 percent of their attempts from beyond the arc, while holding a 42-18 rebounding advantage.
Boston University opened the game by jumping out to an early 11-5 lead, before the Crusaders scored the next six points to pull ahead (12-11). The Terriers were later up 19-18, when they used a 9-2 spurt to go in front by nine (28-20). Boston University eventually led 30-26 heading into the locker room at halftime.
The Terriers opened the second half with seven straight points to extend their lead to 11 (37-26). Holy Cross was never able to get any closer than 10 points in the final 16 minutes of play, with Boston University going on to post a 14-point victory.
Senior guard Patrick Benzan finished the night with 11 points and four assists. Max Mahoney led the Terriers with 19 points and nine rebounds, while Tyler Scanlon posted 17 points and 10 boards.
The Crusaders will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 2, when they travel to American for a 2:00 p.m. game.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
• Butler scored at least 20 points for the fourth time this season.
• The game between the Crusaders and the Terriers was part of the fourth annual Turnpike Trophy competition, in which Boston University now holds a 6-1 lead.
• Scanlon was selected as the game's Turnpike Trophy MVP.
