WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior wide receiver Martin Dorsey set career highs with 10 receptions and 167 receiving yards, but the Holy Cross football team was defeated by Bucknell 19-16 on Homecoming weekend at Fitton Field. The Crusaders fall to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the Patriot League with the loss, while the Bison improve to 1-4 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
Following the game, Bucknell tailback Jared Cooper received the Johnny Turco Award, which is presented annually by the Holy Cross Varsity Club, the Class of 1952 and the Holy Cross Club of Worcester to the Most Outstanding Player in the Homecoming day game. Cooper rushed the ball 24 times for 75 yards and a touchdown, while catching four passes for 15 yards.
The Crusaders opened the game by taking a 7-0 lead at the 4:46-mark of the first quarter on a seven-yard touchdown run by junior tailback Domenic Cozier. The Bison responded with a pair of field goals by Ethan Torres in the second quarter, and Holy Cross went into the locker room up 7-6.
Bucknell pulled in front in the third quarter on a 36-yard scoring run by Cooper, then made the score 19-7 early in the fourth quarter when Alan Butler caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from Logan Bitikofer. The Crusaders trimmed the margin to 19-9 a few minutes later when senior defensive lineman Neil Vorster tackled Cooper in the end zone. Senior quarterback Geoff Wade then found senior wide out Richie DeNicola for a 59-yard touchdown to make the score 19-16 with 6:57 left to play. But Holy Cross would not get the ball back until just 36 remained in the fourth quarter, and was unable to pick up another first down before the Bison ran out the clock.
Wade finished the game by hitting on 18 of 32 passes for 265 yards and a score, while Cozier carried the ball 21 times for 87 yards and a touchdown. Senior defensive lineman Teddy Capsis led the Crusader defense with six tackles, two sacks, three tackles for loss and a pass breakup.
Holy Cross returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 6, when it travels to New Hampshire for a 12:00 p.m. game.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
• Dorsey's 167 receiving yards are the ninth most ever by a Holy Cross player in a single game, and the most since Brendan Flaherty had 196 receiving yards at Georgetown in 2016.
• The Crusaders still lead the all-time series with the Bison 22-13, but Bucknell has won in each of its last three visits to Fitton Field.
• Junior defensive back Chris Riley intercepted a pass for the second game in a row.
• Vorster's safety was the first for Holy Cross in over two years.
