WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior linebacker Ryan Brady made a career-high 17 total tackles, but the Holy Cross football team was defeated by Dartmouth 34-14 at Fitton Field. The Crusaders fall to 1-3 on the season with the loss, while the Big Green improves to 2-0 overall.
Junior defensive back Alex Johnson finished the game with a career-best 13 tackles, while sophomore defensive back Joe Lang added eight tackles with one tackle for loss. On the offensive side of the ball, senior quarterback Geoff Wade hit on 20 of 31 passes for 196 yards and two scores. Dartmouth's Derek Kyler completed 25 of 35 attempts for 258 yards and three scored on the day, and Isiah Swan posted three tackles and three interceptions for the Big Green defense.
Dartmouth moved the ball deep into Holy Cross territory on each of its first four possessions, but led just 6-0 midway through the second quarter as Connor Davis only made two of four field goal attempts. The Big Green then added a 25-yard scoring run by Caylin Parker, before Kyler hit Drew Estrada for a 17-yard touchdown with just three seconds left in the quarter to make the score 20-0 at halftime.
In the second half, Dartmouth increased its lead to 34-0 as Kyler threw a pair of touchdown passes to Connor Rempel. The Crusaders put their first points on the board when Wade hit senior tight end Derek Mountain for a 70-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Senior wide out Tate Beachley then scored the final points of the day on a nine-yard scoring strike from Wade.
The Big Green finished the game with 448 yards of total offense, in addition to holding the ball for 39:34. Holy Cross managed just 209 total yards and committed four turnovers.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Sept. 29, when they play host to Bucknell at 1:05 p.m. as part of Homecoming weekend.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
• Beachley scored the first touchdown of his collegiate career, while setting career highs with four receptions and 28 receiving yards.
• Mountain's 70-yard touchdown reception was the longest play of his Holy Cross career.
• The Big Green has now won four straight games over the Crusaders.
• Holy Cross wore its new black uniforms for the first time.
