MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Holy Cross women's hockey team lost, 3-1, to the Sacred Heart Pioneers in the semifinal game of the NEWHA Tournament. Junior Julie Matthias had the only Holy Cross goal, unassisted. The Crusaders will play in the consolation game, Feb. 25, at 12 p.m. against either Saint Anselm or Franklin Pierce.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
1-0 HC (1st, 15:19 EV): Junior Julie Matthias started a three-on-two against the Pioneers defense slipping a pass to senior Kara Violette. After losing possession, Matthias got the puck back and scored from the left side.
1-1 SH (2nd, 14:09 EV): After a Holy Cross clear straight up the middle in the defensive zone, Sacred Heart's Taylor Moreland scored the equalizer.
1-2 HC (3rd, 4:59 EV): The opening of the third period was all Sacred Heart and Jordan Sanislo gave the Pioneers the lead.
1-3 SH (3rd, 19:14, Empty Net): Sacred Heart's Payne scored an empty netter as Holy Cross tried to get the equalizer with less than a minute to play in the final period.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Matthias scored her 10th goal of the season.
- Sophomore Marcia LaPlante had 22 saves.
- Holy Cross won 61% of the faceoffs and outshot the Pioneers 27-25.
