WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's hockey team lost to No. 8 Providence, 5-1, Friday night at Schneider Arena. The game was the final contest of the year for both sides.
The Crusaders played well for stretches and put pressure on the Friars in ways they weren't able to back in October when these two sides faced off for the first time. Maeve Reilly scored her fourth goal of the year on a nice play with the assists coming from Katie MacCuaig and Victoria Young. Six different Crusaders had multiple shots on goal, but none were able to find the back of the net besides Reilly.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
1-0 PC (1st, 6:37, EV): Providence took an early lead off the stick of Meaghan Rickard.
2-0 PC (1st, 12:32, EV): The Friars added a second six minutes later.
2-1 HC (2nd, 8:26, EV): The Crusaders got one back thanks to Reilly. The senior scooped up the puck at the blue line and beat a defender down the right side. Reilly slid across the crease from right to left and backhanded it by the Friar's netminder.
3-1 PC (2nd, 12:39, EV): Providence answered back when Maureen Murphy let one go from inside the right faceoff circle and hit the top left corner of the net.
4-1 PC (3rd, 8:48, EV): The Friars increased their lead on a play where there appeared to be goalie interference, but the goal was ruled to be clean.
5-1 PC (3rd, 9:03, EV): Murphy got her second of the night after she intercepted the puck in Holy Cross' defensive zone.
UP NEXT:
The Crusaders will have almost a month off from game action and won't take the ice again until Jan. 4 at UConn.
