WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men's hockey was defeated by No. 3 Providence on Nov. 3 in the Hart Center, 3-0. Beau Collins recorded his first collegiate start and made 35 saves. Holy Cross falls to 1-5-0 and Providence improves to 5-1-1.
The Crusaders and Friars skated to a scoreless opening 20 minutes. Collins turned aside 13 shots in the opening period and helped the Crusaders kill one penalty. The Crusaders had nine shots in the first and a few power play chances but were unable to get on the board.
Early in the second period, Providence scored on the power play to take the lead, 1-0. Collins made 14 more saves in the second period and the Crusaders tallied seven shots on net.
The Friars extended their lead to 2-0 just over five minutes into the third period after Ben Mirageas took a point shat that made its way through traffic. Late in the third period, the Crusaders pulled Collins for some extra offense but the Friars tallied an empty net goal, 3-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
1-0 PC (2nd – 1:11): Tic-tac-toe passing on the power play gave Providence's Spencer Young a quick wrist shot at the left faceoff dot that handcuffed Collins for a 1-0 lead.
2-0 PC (3rd – 5:49): With offensive zone possession, Ben Mirageas took a shot from the point that ricocheted off the cross bar and into the back of the net.
3-0 PC (3rd – 18:24): Brandon Duhaime tallied an empty net goal.
NOTES & NUMBERS:
- Beau Collins made 35 saves in his first collegiate start.
- Holy Cross killed five of six penalties.
- Providence's Hayden Hawkey made 27 saves.
- The Hart Center was sold out for the game, setting a new attendance record.
