WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men's hockey team claimed its first win of the 2018-19 season in its season opener. The Crusaders defeated the Golden Griffins, 4-2, on Friday night at the Hart Center. Senior Mitch Collett tallied two goals and freshman Anthony Vincent added two assists on the night. Senior goaltender Tommy Nixon made 30 saves in his season debut. Holy Cross improves to 1-0-0 and 1-0-0 in league play and Canisius falls to 0-1-0, 0-1-0 in league play.
In the first period, the Crusaders took the lead when Peter Crinella scored off of an offensive zone faceoff.
The second period carried a lot more action as the Crusaders scored twice more and Canisius found its way onto the board. Holy Cross took a two goal lead on a rare delayed penalty goal. But the Golden Griffins capitalized on offensive pressure and cut the Crusader lead. Holy Cross responded by way of Neil Robinson less than one minute later.
The third period saw a power play goal from Canisius to make it a one goal game. Holy Cross added an empty net goal to seal the game, 4-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
1-0 HC (1st – 17:58): Matt Barry won the offensive zone faceoff back to Peter Crinella at the top of the faceoff circle on the board. Crinella fired off a one-time shot that cleanly beat Canisius' Tucker Weppner.
2-0 HC (2nd – 3:30): The Crusaders were called for a delayed penalty and Canisius was skating six-on-five. Mitch Collett blocked a shot just below the blue line that deflected into the Golden Griffins' open net.
2-1 CNS (2nd – 12:53): After a three-on-one was broken up, Canisius' Logan Gestro threw a puck toward the near post from the corner that snuck in.
3-1 HC (2nd – 13:31): Kevin Darrar set up Neil Robinson in the high slot after they created a miniature three-on-one in front of the Canisius goal. Robinson collected the puck and shot under the cross bar.
3-2 CNS (3rd – 07:10): On the power play, Nick Hutchinson tallied his first of the season.
4-2 HC (3rd - 18:46): With the goalie pulled for an extra man advantage, freshman Anthony Vincent blocked a shot at the point that Collett collected and gave back to Vincent to send him into the neutral zone. Vincent passed to Collett in the offensive zone and the senior forward tapped in the empty net goal.
