The Lead: Junior catcher Savannah Young went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the No. 4 seed Holy Cross softball team, but the Crusaders' 2017 season came to an end in the second round of the Patriot League Tournament with a 7-0 loss to No. 3 seed Army West Point in Bethlehem, Pa. on Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Holy Cross earned the first two hits of the game with back-to-back singles by junior first baseman Taylor Moss and Young in the bottom of the second inning. Up next, freshman designated player Sydney Behrens took a walk to load the bases with two outs. However, the Army third baseman Emily Ballesteros caught a line drive delivered by senior left fielder Kylee Malouf to end the inning damage-free.
- The Black Knights matched the Crusaders' two hits in the top of the third inning to plate their first two runs. Lacey Swafford picked up the first RBI on a single to center field, before Army scored another run on a run-down play that resulted in an error take a 2-0 lead.
- Army notched three more runs in the top of the fourth inning before adding another run in the top of the fifth inning, as Holy Cross trailed 6-0.
- After a single to left field by senior second baseman Emily Krisanda and a pair of fielder's choice plays, Holy Cross got runners on first and third base with two outs in the bottom half of the fifth inning. However, a runner's interference call at second base ended the inning for the Crusaders.
- Army tacked on another run in the top of the sixth inning to expand out to a 7-0 advantage, as Holy Cross was unable to respond and suffered the loss.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Young went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Holy Cross.
- Army West Point outhit Holy Cross, 11-5.
- The Black Knights were led by Katie Ontiveros who went 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI.
- Holy Cross left 10 runners on base, while the Black Knights left 12 base runners stranded.
- Junior pitcher Katy Watson pitched 4.2 innings to take the loss for Holy Cross.
- Renee Poirier threw a complete seven innings to earn the win for Army.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- The Crusaders competed in the Patriot League Tournament for the first time in six seasons and made their 14th overall appearance in the conference postseason.
- Holy Cross holds a 5-8 all-time record in postseason play as a No. 4 seed.
- Krisanda ended the year on a 12-game hitting streak, batting .469 during this span with an .813 slugging percentage and five doubles. She led the team with a .356 batting average, 47 hits, a .500 slugging percentage and four home runs this season.
- Krisanda and Young led the Crusaders at the plate this weekend, batting .500.
