Women's Track And Field Sets Two Records At Skyhawk Invitational

THE BASICS:

Results: 3rd out of 10 Teams (89.50 Pts.)
Location: Easton, Mass. (W.B. Mason Stadium)
Date: April 29, 2017
The Lead: Junior Zoe Matherne broke her third school record of the year, as the 4x100-meter relay team of sophomores Isabella DiMare, Sarah Friess, Alexandra Curtin and freshman Allie Smiley broke an additional Holy Cross record for the women's track and field team at the Skyhawk Invitational hosted by Stonehill on Saturday. The Crusaders took third place out of 10 teams.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • While setting the outdoor 400-meter dash record, Matherne placed fourth overall with her time of 57.22. Matherne's mark was good for meeting the New England qualifying standards.
  • The Crusaders' 4x100-meter relay team captured first place with their record-breaking time of 46.93. The squad bettered their prior ECAC and New England qualifying standards set at past meets this season.
  • DiMare went on to set two personal records. First, she ran for second place in the 100-meter hurdles with her time of 14.69. Next, she placed third in the 400-meter hurdles with her time of 1:03.88. Each mark qualified her for the New England Outdoor Championship.
  • Freshman Morgan Sanders finished just behind DiMare in the 100-meter hurdles, taking sixth place with her time of 14.99 for her career-best mark in that event.
  • Senior co-captain Jennifer Kimball hit a personal record distance of 37.60 meters in the javelin throw to take fifth place, as senior Samantha Speroni cleared a personal record height of 3.40 meters in the pole vault for a fourth-place finish. Kimball later cleared a height of 1.55 meters in the high jump for her second fifth place finish of the day.
  • Curtin landed in fourth place in the long jump with her career-best outdoor distance of 5.67 meters. Right behind her in fifth place for the Crusaders was freshman Taylor Gensler (5.55 meters; personal record), followed by Smiley in sixth place (5.50 meters). Both Curtin and Gensler met the New England qualifying standards.
  • Gensler later led Holy Cross and took sixth place in the triple jump with her personal record distance of 11.35 meters for that event.
  • Smiley also led Holy Cross in the 200-meter dash with her career-best time of 25.60, which qualified her for the New England Outdoor Championship.
  • Sophomore Victoria Attaya placed second in the discus with a career-best toss of 40.94 meters, which qualified for the New England Outdoor Championship. She additionally finished seventh in the hammer throw, reaching a personal-record distance of 39.94 meters.
  • Boston College won the meet with 217 points.
