The Lead: Cal Dearth netted the game-winning goal in overtime and tallied a total of four goals for the Terriers as the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team fell to No. 19 Boston University, 12-11, on Friday in Patriot League action. Senior Jon Vogel led the Crusaders with five goals. The Crusaders will be the No. 5 seed in the Patriot League Tournament and will play at No. 4 seed Navy on Tuesday, April 25 at 6:00 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Terriers started off the game with a 1-0 lead when James Burr scored a goal with 11:59 left in the first quarter.
- Senior Sean Kirkpatrick answered with two goals for the Crusaders as they took a 2-1 lead with 5:01 remaining in the first quarter.
- With only two seconds left of play until the second quarter, Burr scored again for Boston University to tie the game at 2-2.
- Burr netted a hat trick with 13:48 left in the second quarter and just 31 seconds later, Dearth buried a goal to put the Terriers up 4-2.
- Holy Cross ended the Terriers' 3-0 streak when junior Henry Lilly found the back of the net for the Crusaders.
- Jack Beall then responded with a goal as Boston University took a 5-3 lead with 10:11 left in the second quarter.
- Holy Cross netted three straight goals to take a 6-5 lead with 6:40 remaining until the half. Goals were scored by freshman Sean Mullaney, Vogel and junior Logan LeBlond.
- Dearth scored a goal for BU with 4:00 remaining in the second quarter to tie up the game again. The score would remain tied 6-6 at the half.
- The Terriers netted three straight goals to take a 9-6 lead in the third quarter. Goals were scored by Cam Pincus, Brendan Homire and Dearth.
- The Crusaders cut the Terriers' lead to 9-8 with 12:46 remaining in the fourth quarter when Vogel and Kirkpatrick both found the back of the net.
- The Crusaders then tied the game at 9-9 when Vogel buried a goal with 10:52 left in the fourth quarter for his third goal of the game.
- Burr answered with a goal as Boston University took a 10-9 lead to end the Crusaders' 3-0 streak.
- Vogel then responded with two straight goals. Holy Cross took an 11-10 lead when Vogel netted his fifth goal of the game with 5:07 remaining in the fourth quarter.
- Hayden Ruiz scored a goal for the Terriers with 1:48 left in the fourth quarter as the score would remain tied for the rest of regulation.
- Dearth buried a goal in overtime for the Terriers as Boston University posted the 12-11 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Boston University goalkeeper Christian Carson Banister posted 14 saves, while freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Tesoro posted six.
- Holy Cross totaled 40 shots, while Boston University took 28.
- The Crusaders picked up 29 ground balls, while the Terriers tallied 25.
- Boston University won 14 face-offs, while Holy Cross secured 13.
- The Crusaders went 1-3 on extra-man opportunities, while the Terriers went 0-1.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- This will be the Crusaders second straight trip to the Patriot League Tournament. Last year, Holy Cross earned its first ever bid to the tournament.
- The hat trick for Kirkpatrick is the sixth of his career. He leads the team with 26 goals.
- Vogel now has 11 career hat tricks.
- With his four assists, senior Kevin Lux now has 109 career points with 63 goals and 46 assists.
THE TURNPIKE TROPHY:
- The game between the Crusaders and the Terriers was part of the Turnpike Trophy competition. Go here for the schedule and results of the Turnpike Trophy.
- Dearth was named MVP for today's game as he posted four goals. He netted the game-winning goal in overtime on Friday.
- This athletic series between the in-state Patriot League rivals awards points for all head-to-head victories in both the regular season and postseason, with the Turnpike Trophy going to the school which has the most points at the end of the academic year.
- The next Turnpike Trophy match-up will be on April 21-23, when the women's golf teams will compete at the Patriot League Championship.
