Hitscherich Sets School Record In Long Jump At Rhode Island Coaches Invitational

The Lead: Junior Alanna Hitscherich set a new Holy Cross record with a distance of 5.69 meters in the long jump to lead the Holy Cross women's track and field team to a third-place finish out of 14 teams at the Rhode Island Coaches Invitational on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Hitscherich's distance of 5.69 meters was just 0.01 centimeters away from qualifying her for the ECAC Championship, as she took third-place in the meet.
Hitscherich additionally landed in a tied first place finish out of 16 opponents in the triple jump with an 11.09-meter jump.
For the 60-meter hurdles finals, Hitscherich placed fifth overall with a time of 9.08.
Four other Crusaders reached New England qualifying standards.
Junior Zoe Matherne took first place in the 1,000-meter run, qualifying her for the New England Indoor Championship and just missing the ECAC standards by 0.4 seconds with her time of 2:56.69. Also finishing in the top eight in the 1,000-meter run for Holy Cross was junior Kate Spitler (3:05.62).
Junior Claire Turner hit a personal record time and qualified for the New England Indoor Championship in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:16.54. She placed third overall in the race.
Senior Caroline Carr also reached a personal-best mark of 10:13.73 in the 3,000-meter run, qualifying her for the New England Indoor Championship.
Freshman Morgan Sanders ran for a time of 9.09 in the 60-meter hurdles, meeting the New England standards and her personal-best mark for that event.
Senior Cassandra Kobelski threw for a season-best distance of 11.78 meters in the shot put, finishing seventh overall.
Junior Stefanie McArdle led Holy Cross in the 400-meter dash with a personal-best time of 59.65 for a fourth-place finish in the race.
Sophomore Sarah Friess placed ninth overall in the 200-meter dash for a personal-record time of 25.82.
Senior co-captain Rachel Sowinski placed fifth overall in the one-mile with a time of 5:10.18.
In the 500-meter run, junior Meghan Dietter finished fourth with a time of 1:19.12.
Freshman Allie Smiley (7.86) and sophomore Alexandra Curtin (7.94) took the fifth and seventh-place spots, respectively in the 60-meter dash. Curtin later placed sixth in the long jump (5.43 meters).
UMass-Amherst won the meet with 125.5 points.

BEYOND THE RESULTS:

Hitscherich's distance of 5.69 meters in the long jump currently ranks third in the Patriot League.
