The Lead:  Five different Crusaders recorded an individual first-place finish, but the Holy Cross women's swimming and diving team came up short in a dual meet versus Springfield, 153.5-144.5, at home on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Starting off the meet, the team of freshman Kayleigh Hoagland, sophomore Caroline Body, junior Maura Mullaney and junior Katie Conners took first place in the 200 medley relay with a season-best time of 1:53.27.
  • Sophomore diver Casey Sherman won both the one and three-meter diving events for the Crusaders. Sherman took first in the one-meter (252.52) before placing on top in the three-meter (278.25).
  • Hoagland placed first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.51.
  • Mullaney followed with the next first place spot for Holy Cross, finishing on top in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:12.56. Mullaney later placed second in the 100 butterfly (1:01.73).
  • Conners kept the energy in favor of the Crusaders placing first in the 50 freestyle (25.63). With a time of 2:00.51, Conners also took second place in the 200 freestyle.
  • Sophomore Jenny O'Brien captured the next first-place finish for the Crusaders, with a time of 2:14.08 in the 200 backstroke.
  • In the 100 breaststroke, Body took second with a time of 1:11.26.
  • In the two distance freestyles, freshman Leah Zogby placed second with a time of 11:07.66 in the 1,000 freestyle, just missing her personal record by 0.13 seconds. Then in the 500 freestyle, she swam for another second-place finish (5:30.28).
  • The result of the meet came down to the final event, which was the 400 freestyle relay. The squad of sophomore Emma Gurchiek, freshman Madeline Fitzgerald, junior Nina Sparre and Hoagland notched a time of 3:46.62  but finished second place, as Springfield took first and captured the meet.
  • Olivia Paione led the way for the Pride, taking three first-place spots in her individual events.

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Feb. 15-18 for the Patriot League Championship hosted by Bucknell in Lewisburg, Pa.
