WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior quarterback Peter Pujals threw four touchdown passes and rushed for another score, but the Holy Cross football team was defeated by Monmouth 48-36 at Fitton Field. The Crusaders fall to 2-4 on the season while the Hawks improve to 5-1.

Monmouth opened the game by jumping out to a  21-10 lead behind a pair of touchdown passes by Kenji Bahar. The Crusaders cut the deficit to 21-17 at halftime following a 49-yard scoring strike from Pujals to freshman wide receiver Tenio Ayeni on the final play of the second quarter.

The Hawks scored three more touchdowns in the third quarter to take control of the game, including an 89-yard punt return by Kamau Dumas. Holy Cross came back with three fourth quarter touchdowns, but would get no closer than 11 points as Monmouth held on for the victory.

WEEKLY AWARDS:

  • Following the game, Pujals was selected as the Man of the Match presented by the United States Marines.
  • Pujals threw four touchdown passes and ran in another score while posting 509 passing yards.
  • Senior offensive lineman James Murray earned the SERVPRO of South Worcester In the Trenches Lineman of the Game award.
  • Murray helped the Crusader offense total 640 yards on the day, and post 36 points with five touchdowns.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross finished with 640 yards of total offense on the afternoon, including 509 passing yards and 131 rushing.
  • Monmouth posted 515 yards on the day, with 324 passing.
  • Junior linebacker Ryan Brady led the Holy Cross defense with 12 total tackles on the day and one sack.
  • Ayeni caught a pair of touchdown passes, and totaled 89 yards on four catches.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Pujals' 509 passing yards in Saturday's game set a new school record.
