Men's Hockey Skates To 3-3 Tie Against Mercyhurst

The Lead: Junior forwards Danny Lopez and Scott Pooley, and sophomore forward Michael Laffin each found the back of the net as the Holy Cross men's hockey team tied Mercyhurst, 3-3, on Saturday night at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex in Worcester, Mass.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • At 6:14 in the first period, Mercyhurst jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as forward Wes Baker scored a goal off his own rebound in front of the net.
  • At 17:13 in the first period, Lopez notched a power play goal with a scorching shot from the high slot over the glove of Mercyhurst goaltender Colin DeAugustine making the game 1-1.
  • Holy Cross outshot Mercyhurst 11-6 in the first period.
  • At 9:41 in the second period, Pooley was granted a penalty shot where he forcefully placed the puck under the glove of DeAugustine to give the Crusaders a 2-1 lead.
  • With 12 seconds remaining in the second period, Mercyhurst forward Joseph Duszak took advantage of a Holy Cross turnover to tie the game late in the period at 2-2.
  • Holy Cross outshot Mercyhurst 10-9 in the second period.
  • At 3:05 in the third period, Mercyhurst regained the lead when Jonathan Charbonneau's shot was deflected into the direction of Jack Riley who knocked the puck out of the air and over the shoulder of Paul Berrafato.
  • At 14:43 in the third period, the Crusaders tied the game 3-3 off of a power play goal when junior forward Ryan Ferrill worked behind the net to find Laffin in front of the net, who shot the puck over DeAugustine.
  • Mercyhurst outshot Holy Cross 12-11 in the third period.
  • Both sides saw equal scoring opportunities during the overtime period but neither team was able to capitalize ending the game in a 3-3 tie.

POSTGAME PRESS CONFERENCE

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Berrafato made 26 saves for the Crusaders while DeAugustine had 33 saves for the Lakers.
  • Holy Cross outshot Mercyhurst, 36-29.
  • Holy Cross was 2-for-4 on the power play, while Mercyhurst was 0-for-2.

 BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Pooley's penalty shot goal tonight was the first since Brandon Nunn scored on Oct. 20, 2012 at Clarkson.
  • Holy Cross is 3-1-3 over their last seven games
  • Lopez has had at least one point in 20 of their 24 games this season. He leads the team with 13 goals and 24 points.
  • The Crusaders pick up two points in their weekend series against Mercyhurst, with both of their games ending in 3-3 ties.
  • Holy Cross is 1-1-2 against Mercyhurst on the season.
