THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Sophomore first baseman Taylor Moss had two singles, a walk and stolen base, but the Holy Cross softball team was defeated by Boston University 4-3 at Freshman Field.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Boston U. scored an unearned run in the top of the fourth when Moriah Connolly singled, stole both second and third, then came home on a wild throw after her second steal.
  • The Terriers increased their lead to 4-0 in the sixth inning, with Gabi Martinez and Alexa Ponce both driving in runs.
  • The Crusaders responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to trim the margin to 4-3.
  • Sophomore third baseman Mandy McCarthy had an RBI double in the inning, while two runs scored on an error.
  • But Holy Cross was not able to score in the seventh, as Boston University held on for the win.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Freshman outfielder Jaclyn Brewster had two hits and one run scored on the day.
  • Melanie Russell earned the victory for the Terriers, allowing just one earned run on five hits in a complete game effort.

 

THE TURNPIKE TROPHY:

  • The series between the Crusaders and the Terriers is part of the inaugural Turnpike Trophy competition. Click here for the schedule and results of the Turnpike Trophy. Boston University took the softball point in the standings by sweeping the weekend series.
  • Russell was named this year's Turnpike Trophy MVP in softball.
  • This athletic series between the in-state Patriot League rivals awards points for all head-to-head victories in both the regular season and postseason, with the Turnpike Trophy going to the school which accumulates the most points at the end of the academic year.
  • The next Turnpike Trophy match-up will be on May 6-7, when the men's and women's track and field teams teams square off in Lewisburg, Pa. at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship.
