The Lead: Senior Hailey Mullen (Plainville, Mass.) went 3-for-3 at the plate as the Crusaders defeated Colgate by a score of 7-4 in their first game with the Raiders on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Holy Cross got off to a strong start in the bottom of the first inning by scoring three runs on four hits. After freshman Jaclyn Brewster (Bridgeport, Conn.) led off the inning with a single and classmate Taylor Wahler (Inman, S.C.) followed up with another base hit, junior Emily Krisanda (Oak Hill, Va.) brought home a run with an RBI after reaching on fielder's choice. Wahler scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0, and sophomore Taylor Moss (Howard Beach, N.Y.) hit a single to left field to bring home Krisanda and make it 3-0.
- The Crusaders added another run in the second with a ground out RBI from Wahler.
- Holy Cross followed up with another run in the third inning, as Mullen scored sophomore Mandy McCarthy (Pearl River, N.Y.) with an infield single.
- Colgate responded with a run in the fourth inning to make it 5-1, and notched three runs in the sixth to make it a 5-4 game.
- The Crusaders added two more run in the bottom of the sixth, as Brewster scored sophomore Savannah Young (Celebration, Fla.) with a sacrifice fly to center field and Wahler brought home Mullen with an RBI single.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Crusaders outhit Colgate 11-6.
- Holy Cross left seven runners on base, while Colgate left two.
- Senior Gennifer Durham (Abbeville, S.C.) earned the win, pitching a full seven innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits.
- Brigit Ieuter took the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits through 2.2 innings pitched.
- Mullen went 3-for-3 at the plate while scoring two runs and notching one RBI to lead the Crusaders' offense.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Durham now has 13 complete games pitched, which is a new career-high. She is now tied for the fourth-most career complete games at 39 with Julia Barrett '14. Durham is also now tied with Barrett for the third-most career starts in program history at 70.
GAME TWO
Score: Colgate 2, Holy Cross 1 (8 innings)
Pitching Decision: W: Kyle Griswold (2-7) | L: Katy Watson (0-9)
Time: 2:30 p.m.
Location: Worcester, Mass. (Freshman Field)
The Lead: Sophomore Katy Watson (Bexley, Ohio) pitched six scoreless innings and registered a new career-high in strikeouts as the Crusaders took narrow setback against the Raiders in game two of the weekend series.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Watson started the game strong for Holy Cross, allowing just one hit through the first three innings of play.
- Colgate gained the first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning, scoring an unearned run as a runner reached base on an error. Watson and the Crusader defense allowed no runs through the next three innings, allowing just two runners to reach base on balls.
- The Crusaders answered with a run in the sixth inning to tie the game up. Krisanda reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to third off a double from Moss, then McCarthy brought the run home with an RBI single to left field.
- The Raiders regained the lead in the eighth inning with an RBI single.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Crusaders outhit the Raiders 5-4.
- Colgate left nine runners on base, while Holy Cross left five.
- Watson took the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits through 7.1 innings pitched and dealing 10 strikeouts.
- Kyle Griswold earned the win after pitching a complete eight innings and allowing one run on five hits.
- Moss led the Crusaders' offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Watson's 10 strikeouts are a new career-high.
- Moss now leads the Crusaders with a batting average of .389 on the season.
