THE LEAD: Jonathan Charbonneau netted two goals as the Holy Cross men's hockey team fell to Mercyhurst, 4-2, on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Mercyhurst took a 1-0 lead when Charbonneau found the back of the net at 11:35 in the first period. He was assisted by Derek Barach and Philippe Drouin.
  • The Lakers outshot the Crusaders 10-6 in the first period and each team went 0-2 on the power play.
  • Just 34 seconds into the second period, the Lakers increased their lead with a goal by Kyle Dutra who was assisted by Barach and Charbonneau. 
  • Then, at 4:06, junior forward Danny Lopez scored a power play goal to make the score 2-1. Junior forward Scott Pooley and sophomore defenseman Johnny Coughlin both posted assists on the play.
  • At 18:16, sophomore defenseman Mitch Collett tied the game at 2-2 with his first goal of the season. He was assisted by Pooley.
  • Mercyhurst outshot Holy Cross, 17-6, while the Crusaders went 1-2 on the man-advantage and the Lakers went 0-3.
  • Charbonneau netted his second goal of the game at 7:15 in the third period to give the Lakers a 3-2 lead. Jeremy Wu and Les Lancaster each posted an assist on the goal.
  • Then, at 10:46, Nathan Ferriero converted the power play goal to secure a 4-2 victory for the Lakers. Drouin and Patrick Piacentini recorded assists on the play. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Mercyhurst outshot Holy Cross, 35-19.
  • Junior goalie Paul Berrafato recorded 31 saves, while Colin DeAugustine tallied 17.
  • The Crusaders went 1-6 on the power play, while the Lakers went 1-8.
  • Holy Cross won 30 face-offs while Mercyhurst won 34.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • Lopez has posted at least one point in eight straight games with four goals and five assists for nine points.
