THE LEAD: Sophomore defenseman Johnny Coughlin,  junior forward Ryan Ferrill and junior assistant captain Tommy Muratore each netted a goal as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated Mercyhurst, 3-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • At 3:52 of the first period, Coughlin gave the Crusaders a 1-0 lead with a power play goal. Junior forwards Danny Lopez and Scott Pooley each posted an assist on the goal.
  • Ferrill then found the back of the net at 13:29 to increase the lead to 2-0. Freshman defenseman Dalton Skelly and senior assistant captain Mike Barrett tallied assists.
  • Holy Cross outshot Mercyhurst, 18-6, while the Crusaders went 1-1 on the power play and the Lakers went 0-1.
  • At 16:57 of the second period, Muratore scored to give the Crusaders a 3-0 lead. Lopez and Ferrill each posted an assist.
  • Just 1:34 later, Jonathan Charbonneau netted a power play goal for the Lakers to cut the lead to 3-1.
  • Holy Cross outshot Mercyhurst, 14-6, while the Crusaders went 0-2 on the man-advantage and the Lakers went 1-1.
  • At 7:58 of the third period, Charbonneau scored his second straight goal to make it a 3-2 contest.
  • With the game still at 3-2, the Lakers went with an empty net with 1:04 left, but were unable to score the equalizer for the 3-2 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Holy Cross outshot Mercyhurst, 42-21.
  • Junior goalie Paul Berrafato recorded 19 saves, while Colin DeAugustine tallied 39.
  • The Crusaders went 1-5 on the power play, while the Lakers went 1-3.
  • The Crusaders won 36 face-offs, while the Lakers secured 30. 

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • Lopez has posted at least one point in seven straight games with three goals and five assists for eight points.
  • Barrett is on a five-game point streak with one goal and seven assists for eight points. For the season he has three goals and 11 assists for 14 points. He leads the nation with 1.22 assists per game. Barrett has 36 goals and 50 assists for 86 career points.
  • With 33 goals this season, the Crusaders have scored their most goals to start the season in 14 years when they scored 36 goals through the first nine games of the 2002-2003 season.
  • The Crusaders' 5-2-2 record is their best start to the season in four years when the team went 7-2-0 during the 2012-2013 season.
