THE LEAD: Junior forward Scott Pooley scored the game-winner and junior goalie Paul Berrafato posted the shutout as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated Brown, 3-0, at the newly renovated Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first period went scoreless as Berrafato made 12 saves and Brown goalie Gavin Nieto posted nine. Each team went 0-1 on the power play.
  • At 8:54, Pooley got the scoring started with a one-time wrist shot from the slot past Nieto to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead. Freshman defenseman Dalton Skelly and junior assistant captain Mike Barrett each recorded an assist on the goal.
  • Shortly after at 11:53,  junior forward Danny Lopez added to the Crusader lead with a wrist shot to the middle of the net from the top of the right face off circle for the power play goal. Sophomore defenseman Johnny Coughlin and Skelly each tallied an assist.
  • Holy Cross outshot Brown 8-5 in the second period, while the Crusaders went 1-2 on the man-advantage and the Bears went 0-2.
  • Sophomore forward Michael Laffin found the back of the net for the second time this season at 15:27 of the third period when he collected the rebound off a shot from Pooley and knocked the puck in past Nieto. Barrett also recorded an assist on the goal as the Crusaders secured the 3-0 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Holy Cross outshot Brown, 32-23.
  • Berrafato recorded 23 saves, while Nieto tallied 29.
  • The Crusaders went 1-5 on the power play, while the Bears went 0-4.
  • Holy Cross won 36 face-offs, while Brown secured 26.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • The Crusaders' 3-1-1 start is their best in four years when they were 4-1-0 in 2012-2013.
  • The Crusaders' 18 goals in the first five games are their most in 14 years.
  • Tonight's victory was the Crusaders' third straight win against the Bears.
  • Holy Cross has outscored Brown 10-0 in the last three games at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex. The Crusaders are now 6-4-0 all-time against the Bears and 4-1-0 at the Hart Center.
  • The Crusaders are 2-1-0 this season versus non-conference opponents.
  • Berrafato recorded his fourth career shutout, which ranks third all-time in the school's Division I history.
  • Skelly's two points was his first multiple point game of his career.
  • Pooley's goal was his first of the season and the 25th of his career.
