The Lead: With the Crusaders trailing 1-0 in the second half, senior Joey DeVivo netted the equalizer as the Holy Cross men's soccer team tied Colgate 1-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Zach Pagani gave Colgate the lead in the 48th minute (47:05) when he scored his team-best fifth goal of the season. Jared Stroud sent Pagani a through pass from midfield, as he fired a shot to back of the net.
- In the 67th minute (66:14), DeVivo tied the game on a shot from 20 yards out that found the bottom left corner of the net off a pass from senior Matt Villano.
- Junior Arno Rupp had a chance to put the Crusaders ahead when he rocketed a shot across the net in the 71st minute that just missed the feet of junior Nicholas Cestaro.
- With seven seconds left in the first overtime, sophomore Owen Azrak's header just missed clinching the victory, landing to the right of the goal off a pass from Rupp.
- With 40 seconds left in the second overtime, Colgate was unable to capitalize on a free kick to preserve the tie as Stroud's attempt went wide.
KOOLMAN'S KORNER:
- “I think apart from the goal we were pretty disciplined defensively." said head coach Marco Koolman. "In the second half we played better offensively and were able to score the equalizer. I would like to see us be a little more composed in the final third. We left it all out on the field. I'm proud of the way we competed and battled.”
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Freshman goalkeeper Bobby Hurstak made two saves, while Colgate goalkeeper Ricky Brown also had two.
- The Raiders outshot the Crusaders, 15-9. Both Colgate and Holy Cross had three shots on goal.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- DeVivo's now has 23 career goals and is tied for seventh on the Holy Cross all-time career goals records.
