  • The Lead: Freshman goalkeeper Marcia LaPlante made 11 saves as Holy Cross earned a 1-0 shootout win over Bucknell on Saturday afternoon in Worcester.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both teams played a strong first half defensively, as shots were held to 3-2 in favor of Holy Cross.
  • Bucknell made an offensive push in the second half, outshooting the Crusaders 7-0. The Holy Cross defense was able to limit the Bison's shots on net to two, despite seven penalty corner opportunities for Bucknell.
  • The Bison outshot the Crusaders 10-5 through both overtime periods, including 7-3 in shots on goal, but LaPlante and the Holy Cross defense kept the ball out of their net.
  • Junior forward Maureen Connolly had a chance to end the game for Holy Cross with five minutes remaining in the second overtime period as she found a loose ball in the circle, but she was unable to sneak the ball past the Bucknell goalkeeper.
  • The Crusaders won the game in the shootout, outscoring the Bison 2-1. Sophomore midfielder Lauren Ineson and Connolly were both successful in their attempts, and LaPlante was able to hold off Bucknell in four of five attempts.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • LaPlante made a total of 11 saves in the win.
  • Emily Finn stopped three shots for the Bison.
  • Shots attempted were 19-8 Bucknell.
  • Connolly led the Crusaders with three shots attempted.

 BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • This was LaPlante's second shutout of the season in her second consecutive game. She has not allowed a goal in 178:21 of playing time.
  • This was the first victory for the Crusaders over Bucknell since 2008, when Holy Cross defeated the Bison 3-2 in overtime on Nov. 1 of that season.
  • The Crusaders now have their most Patriot League wins since 2006, when the team went 4-1 in league play.

  • Holy Cross returns to action this Tuesday, Oct. 18, as it plays host to Quinnipiac in non-conference action at the Hart Turf Field at the Luth Athletic Complex at 7:05 p.m.
