HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Bison took the early lead in the first minute of the game (00:54) when senior Adam Bradshaw sent a corner kick into the box. Freshman Nick King took a shot that hit the right post, then senior Sebastiaan Blickman knocked in the rebound for the first goal of the game.
  • In the 10th minute of the game (9:58), junior Eric Dixon posted the Crusaders' first shot on goal as his attempt from 10 yards out was saved by freshman Emmett Witmer.
  • During the 18th minute (17:17) the Crusaders attempted to score an equalizer as junior Justin Carfora sent a cross ball to senior Matt Villano as his shot just went wide of the goal.
  • Then in the 39th minute (38:55), Witmer attempted a save for the Bison but was just outside the box resulting in a handball.
  • Senior Joey DeVivo fired the ensuing free kick from 19 yards out to the upper right corner of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
  • In the 51st minute of the game, Carfora sent a shot from 10 yards out as Witmer made a save with his foot.
  • In the 75th minute (74:28), DeVivo blasted a shot from 25 yards out to the top right of the goal. Witmer made a one handed diving save to keep the score at 1-1.
  • Just a minute and a half later (75:53), Blickman fired a shot from 30 yards out, which was redirected by Muessle and into the goal giving the Bison a 2-1 lead over the Crusaders.
  • With 45 seconds remaining in the second half, freshman Luka Milidragovic headed the ball towards the goal from six yards out which was saved by Witmer securing the 2-1 victory for Bucknell.

KOOLMAN'S KORNER:

  • “We needed to play better defensively today,” said Holy Cross head coach Marco Koolman. “It is tough when you give up an early goal like we did but I like how we battled back to tie the game. In the second half, we had a lot of chances but their goalkeeper came up with some good saves and our final touch of the ball has to get better. Even though their game-winning goal was off of a deflection, we have to hold ourselves accountable for giving away those chances and work on defending details. Our effort was strong today and we look forward to continuing Patriot League play.”

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Freshman Bobby Hurstak made two saves, while Witmer posted seven.
  • The Crusaders outshot the Bison, 17-13. The Crusaders had eight shots on goal while the Bison had four.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • The Crusaders' 20 goals are their most to start a season in 10 years when they also had netted 20 goals in 2006.
  • DeVivo has now scored 22 career goals, which places him eighth all-time in program history.

UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 5, when they travel to West Point to face Patriot League opponent Army West Point at 7:00 p.m.
