The Lead: The Crusaders registered a season-high 60 shots on net, as they defeated #6 Castleton, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon to win the Rutland Herald Invitational.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Castleton would get on the board first, as Hannah Rose found the back of the net at 5:59 of the first period.
- Senior Taylor McGee (Pearl River, N.Y.) would tie it back up with a shorthanded goal 7:02 of the first.
- Holy Cross outshot the Spartans 17-4 in the first period.
- Senior Mackenzie Boardman (Anchorage, Alaska) gave the Crusaders the lead with just six seconds left in the second period to make it 2-1.
- The Crusaders outshot Castleton 22-10 in the second period.
- Freshman Sam Girard (Dedham, Mass.) would make it 3-1 Holy Cross at 2:11 of the third period off an assist from freshman Maeve Reilly (Ridgefield, Conn.).
- Junior Izzy Bagi (Branford, Conn.) capped off the Crusaders' scoring with a goal on the power play at 3:20 of the third to make it 4-1.
- Holy Cross outshot the Spartans 21-13 in the third period.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Sophomore goaltender Tessie Salatas (Laval, Quebec) made 26 saves and allowed one goal to earn the win in net for Holy Cross. She improves to 5-0-0 in net this season.
- Jess Cameron stopped 56 shots and allowed four goals in net for Castleton.
- The Crusaders outshot the Spartans 60-27.
- Holy Cross was 1-for-4 on the power play, while Castleton was 0-for-4.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Salatas was named the Rutland Herald Invitational MVP.
- Boardman and junior Erin Hall (Pembroke, Mass.) were named to the all-tournament team.
- This is the fourth-straight year the Crusaders have won the Rutland Herald Invitational.
- Holy Cross is now 18-0-0 all-time against Castleton.
- The Crusaders extend their current win streak to eight games.
