THE LEAD: Ryan Schmelzer tallied the overtime game-winner for the Golden Griffins, while sophomore forward Scott Pooley (Granger, Ind.) tallied the lone goal for the Crusaders as the Holy Cross men's ice hockey team fell to Canisius 2-1 in overtime on Saturday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Canisius opened the scoring at 5:29 of the first period, as Jack Stander received a drop pass from Dylan McLaughlin in the slot and his one-timer found the back of the net to make it 1-0 Canisius.
- Holy Cross outshot Canisius 13-8 in the first period, while Canisius went 0-1 on the only power play of the period.
- At 2:23 of the second period and with the Crusaders on the man-advantage, sophomore forward Danny Lopez (Barrington Hills, Ill.) sent a cross ice pass to Pooley who wristed a shot from the right circle that beat Simon Hofley low on the blocker side to make it 1-1. Senior captain Matt Vidal (Manorville, N.Y.) also recorded an assist on Pooley's goal.
- The Crusaders outshot Canisus 17-4 in the second period, going 1-2 on the man-advantage, while Canisius went 0-1.
- At 13:00 of the third period, Pooley moved up the right wing on a breakaway chance, yet his backhander was kicked away by Holfey to keep it even at 1-1.
- With 4:55 remaining in the third period, senior defenseman Karl Beckman (Okemos, Mich.) moved through the slot on a breakaway opportunity, and his shot was gloved down by Holfey.
- Neither team tallied a goal during the third period, as the teams began overtime.
- With 2:16 remaining in overtime, Ralph Cuddemi sent a shot on goal from the right circle and it was deflected in front by Schmelzer, beating sophomore goalie Paul Berrafato (Williamsville, N.Y.) on the glove side, as Canisus tallied the 2-1-overtime victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Holy Cross outshot Canisus 43-26 in the contest.
- Berrafato recorded 24 saves, while Holfey tallied 42 saves.
- Canisus went 0-3 on the power play, while Holy Cross went 1-2.
- Each team won 24 face-offs.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Pooley has now scored in three straight games.
- Pooley has now posted a career high 11 goals as he netted 10 last year as a freshman.
- The Crusaders are 2-1-2 this season in overtime.
