The Lead: Amadu Kunateh scored the game-winning goal in double overtime for the Big Green as the Holy Cross men's soccer team fell to Dartmouth, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Big Green outshot the Crusaders by a 3-1 margin in the first half in total shots, but neither team took a shot on goal. Each team had two corner kicks.
- The Crusaders took the first shot on goal of the game in the 62nd minute but James Hickok made a save on a shot by junior Matt Villano (Basking Ridge, N.J.).
- In the 76th minute, Samuel Rosen sent a shot over the net for Dartmouth as the game remained tied.
- Neither team was able to find the back of the net in regulation as the game went to overtime.
- In the 97th minute, senior Diego Ceron (Belleville, N.J.) drove to the goal and sent a pass to Villano who blasted a shot that went off the crossbar as the game remained tied.
- With two seconds left in the first overtime period, senior captain Kevin Wright (McKinney, Texas) made a save on a shot by Alberto Gorini as the game went to the second overtime.
- The Big Green won the game in the 102nd minute when Kunateh sent a header off a long throw-in to back of the net for the winner.
KOOLMAN ON THE GAME:
- “It was a very even game but we had a lot of chances and played very well,” said Holy Cross head coach Marco Koolman. “I thought we did a good job offensively, we just could not capitalize on the opportunities we made. Defensively we are playing really well which has been a collective effort. We just need to now finish our opportunities offensively. But I thought the team played hard today.”
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Wright made one save for Holy Cross, while Hickok also had one save for the Big Green.
- The Big Green outshot Holy Cross, 10-9, as Dartmouth had two shots on goal and the Crusaders had one.
- The Big Green took seven corner kicks and the Crusaders tallied five.

- The Crusaders return to action on Friday, Sept. 11 when they play a home contest versus Sacred Heart at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium at 4:00 p.m.
