Volleyball Sweeps UMass Lowell For Second Straight Win

The Lead: Three Crusaders each recorded double-digit kills and junior captain Katie McKernan (Sylvania, Ohio) posted a double-double as the Holy Cross volleyball team defeated UMass Lowell, 3-0, by scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 25-12 on Saturday afternoon at the UMass Lowell Invitational. The Crusaders improve to 2-0 at the tournament and will conclude play versus San Jose State today at 4:30 p.m. The Crusaders defeated Quinnipiac on Friday, 3-0.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Junior Mandy Sifferlen (Sudbury, Mass.) and freshman Lynsey Petersen (Palos Verdes, Calif.) each tallied 12 kills, while junior Natalie Welsch (Eden Prairie, Minn.) posted 11 kills. Petersen (.562), Sifferlen (.478) and Welsch (.478) all recorded outstanding hitting percentages. McKernan tallied a double-double with 31 assists and 12 digs.
  • Rachel Arnason, Lauren Bennett and Masha Yelsukova each posted six kills for the River Hawks.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • McKernan now has 1,412 career assists which are eighth all-time in program history. Her double-double was her third of the season and the 23rd of her career.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders took the first set by a 25-16 score. Petersen led the Crusaders with six kills as she posted an outstanding .714 hitting percentage.
  • With the second set tied at 17-17, the Crusaders then won eight of the next 12 points to secure the 25-21 win. Petersen tallied six kills and Welsch posted five.
  • The Crusaders controlled the third set winning 25-12 to clinch the match. Sifferlen led the team with five kills.

UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders return to action this afternoon, Saturday, September 12, as they conclude play at the UMass Invitational with a match versus San Jose State at 4:30 p.m.
