The Lead: Freshman Lynsey Petersen (Palos Verdes, Calif.) posted her first collegiate double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs, but the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Quinnipiac, 3-2, at the Hampton Inn-vitational at the Chace Athletic Center on the campus of Bryant on Saturday afternoon by scores of 25-21, 22-25, 25-23, 20-25, 15-12. Junior Mandy Sifferlen (Sudbury, Mass.) was named to the All-Tournament team as she led the Crusaders with 55 kills and also posted 24 digs over the three matches.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Sifferlen led the Crusaders with 20 kills, while junior captain Katie McKernan (Sylvania, Ohio) posted 49 assists. Junior Emily Popp (Clarkston, Mich.) led the team with 27 digs and sophomore Mary Mullen (Mendota Heights, Minn.) tallied a team-best six blocks. Junior Natalie Welsch (Eden Prairie, Minn.) tallied double-digit kills with 11.
  • Quinnipiac was led by Katie Urycki who had a double-double with 20 kills and 10 digs.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • McKernan's 49 assists are a career best. Her previous best was 48 at Bryant on Oct. 8, 2013.
  • Sifferlen's 20 kills marks the third time in her career she has posted over 20 kills. She tallied 23 kills versus Hartford on Sept. 9, 2014, and 21 kills yesterday in the season-opener versus Iona on Friday, Aug. 28.
  • This is the second time in her career that Sifferlen has been named to an All-Tournament team as she also earned the honor at the 2014 Boston College Invitational.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Quinnipiac took the first set by a 25-21 score as Urycki led the Bobcats with five kills, while Sifferlen totaled four kills for the Crusaders.
  • With the second set tied at 22-22, the Crusaders won three straight points to earn the 25-22 win as Sifferlen posted a kill on set point. Sifferlen tallied seven kills to lead the Crusaders.
  • Trailing the third set 24-21, the Crusaders then won two consecutive points, but a kill by Allison Leigh gave the Bobcats the 25-23 victory and a 2-1 lead in the match. Urycki tallied seven kills for Quinnipiac in the set.
  • The Crusaders forced a fifth set by winning the fourth, 25-20. Welsch led the team with four kills.
  • With the fifth set tied at 12-12, the Bobcats won three straight points to clinch the match with the 15-12 fifth-set victory.

UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders will return to action on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 4-5, when they compete at the Fairfield Invitational at Alumni Hall in Fairfield, Conn. The Crusaders will take on tournament-host Fairfield at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, while on Saturday they will play New Hampshire at 10:00 a.m. and Stony Brook at 3:00 p.m.
