The Lead: Junior Emily Jarvis (Hopkinton, Mass.) lifted Holy Cross in a 5-4 eight-inning victory over Lafayette on Saturday afternoon in game one as she sent her game-winning third home run of the season over the center field fence. In game two, freshman Taylor Moss (Howard Beach, N.Y.) sealed the 4-3 eight victory over the Leopards with a single to right field as the Crusaders took the first two games of the series in Patriot League softball action at Freshman Field. 

GAME 1

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Lafayette tacked on three runs within the second and third innings to give them the early 3-0 lead. Kristyn Marinelli launched a solo bomber that landed over the fence in center field and an RBI single to right field from the bat of Jenna Didio in the top of the second, as Miranda Skurla tacked on the third with a single up the middle. 
  • Holy Cross answered in its half of the third inning with two runs of their own to cut the lead to 3-2. Freshman Mandy McCarthy (Pearl River, N.Y.) and junior Hailey Mullen (Plainville, Mass.) both reached base to begin the inning. Junior tri-captain Sarah Kane (Jacksonville, Fla.) plated both McCarthy and Mullen as she sent a two-RBI single to right center field. 
  • However, the Leopards answered once again as they took the 4-2 lead in the top of the fourth with Kelli Lallis whacking a triple to right field and plating on a single to right field by Rebecca Dvorak. 
  • The Crusader bats came alive in their half of the fourth as they evened the score at 4-4. With two outs and a runners at first and second, McCarthy sent a bases-clearing triple to right center field that scored both sophomore Kylee Malouf (Simi Valley, Calif.) and senior tri-captain Abigail Lang (Londonderry, N.H.)
  •  Neither team was able to plate a run through the next three innings as the game entered extra innings. 
  • Lafayette threatened in the top of the eighth as Marinelli sending a single to center field to begin the inning and advanced to third on a single to right field by Didio with two outs, but Lallis popped up to the second baseman and ended the inning. 
  • With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Jarvis sent her third home run of the season over the fence in center field and sealed the Crusaders 5-4 game one victory. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Lafayette outhit Holy Cross 10-6 through eight innings of play. 
  • The Crusaders stranded three runners on base, while the Leopards left 10 runners on the bags. 
  • Durham took the game one victory (6-9) as she tossed .2 innings of relief and allowed one hit. Holy Cross starter freshman Katy Watson (Bexley, Ohio) got the no decision after she pitched 4.0 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits with two walks and four punch-outs. Freshman pitcher Amanda Gonzalez (West Roxbury, Mass.) pitched 3.1 innings out of the bullpen and allowed two hits with three strikeouts. 
  • Lafyette starter Stephanie Thomas took the loss (2-13) as she tossed 7.2 innings and allowed five runs on six hits with three walks and one strikeout. 
  • Jarvis led the Crusader offense and went 3-4 with two singles, solo home run and one run scored, while McCarthy went 1-3 with a triple, two RBIs and one run scored. 

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE 

  • Jarvis' home run was her team-leading third of the season. 

GAME 2

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The Crusader bats came alive in their half of the first frame as they took the quick 2-0 lead on a two-run bomb to center field from the bat of Jarvis, her second home run of the day. 
  • Lafayette answered in the top of the third as they tied the scored at 2-2. Dvorak sent a double into the left center gap that would plate Morgan Biddle. In the next at-bat, Samantha Sweigart sent a deep fly ball into right field that plated Lallis. 
  • Holy Cross regained the 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single up the middle by sophomore Emily Krisanda (Oak Hill, Va.). 
  • With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Jenna Orlando sent Durham deep with a solo home run that hit the top of the fence in right center field and tied the game at 3-3. 
  • Kane singled to center field to begin the bottom of the eighth and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Krisanda. With one out, Moss slapped a single past the reach of the second basemen into right field that allowed Kane to plate from second and sealed the Crusaders' second eight-inning victory of the day by a final of 4-3. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Holy Cross outhit Lafayette 9-7 through eight innings of play. 
  • The Crusaders left four runners on base, while the Leopards stranded three on base. 
  • Durham earned the game victory (7-9) for the Crusaders as she tossed eight solid innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. 
  • Lafayette starter Lindsey Cherry took the loss (2-14) as she pitched 7.1 innings and allowed four runs on nine hits with one walk and five punch-outs. 
  • Kane went 2-3 with two singles and one run scored, while Jarvis went 1-3 with a two-run home run and scored one run. Moss went 2-4 with two singles and plated one run. 

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE 

  • Jarvis hit her team-leading fourth home run in game two. 
  • Moss hit her first career game-winner. 

UP NEXT 

  • The Crusaders return to the diamond tomorrow, May 3, for the series finale versus Lafayette at 12:00 p.m. at Freshman Field.
